Summary
There have been plenty of uniqueSuper Mario 64mods over the years, and a new one is taking Nintendo’s legendary plumber through a multiverse of other games, likePokemon,Crash Bandicoot, and evenDoom. Released on the Nintendo 64 in 1996,Super Mario 64brought the titular platforming mascot into a 3D world for the very first time and set a standard for navigating three-dimensional environments that is still revered and referenced to this day.
As befitting a game of its legacy,Super Mario 64retains a devoted following through speedrunning and modding communities that offer new ways to enjoy Nintendo’s seminal platforming adventure. Some of the most notable mods add split-screen multiplayer to the usually solo title, reimagine stages from future entries likeSuper Mario OdysseyinMario 64’s low-poly visual style, and evenintroduce Mario’s Elephant formfrom last year’sSuper Mario Bros. Wonder. The recentSuper Mario 64 Co-Op Deluxemod ups the ante even further by adding 16-player co-op, a day/night cycle, and a wealth of new playable characters from across theSuper Mario Bros.franchise.
A talented group of modders is extendingSuper Mario 64into a vast multiverse of worlds from a wide variety of other games, including those that players wouldn’t expect to see the happy-go-lucky plumber visiting. Hosted by YouTube user Rovertronic, the aptly named “Mario in the Multiverse” mod combinesSuper Mario 64’s classic platforming gameplaywith characters and levels from equally iconic franchises likeKirby,Pokemon, and evenCrash Bandicoot. Mario can use power-ups like Kirby’s boomerang-like Cutter hat and Crash’s protective Aku-Aku mask to navigate these strange new dimensions, as shown in Rovertronic’s recently posted “Mario in the Multiverse”teaser trailer.
Mario Explores Other Gaming Worlds In Super Mario 64 Mod
The fun doesn’t stop with colorful platformers either, as Mario can be seen running through the zombie-infested Raccoon City ofResident Evilfame and gunning down demons with a shotgun in a segmentinspired by the often-moddedDoom. According to Rovertronic, players can mix and match different gameplay styles in “Mario in the Multiverse,“meaning that the titular hero could theatrically turn his shotgun toward any unlucky Waddle Dees in his path or cosplay asKatana ZERO’s sword-wielding protagonist for some stylish bullet-time attacks.
So far, Rovertronic hasn’t provided a release date forSuper Mario 64’s “Mario in the Multiverse” mod, explaining that while it’s close to being finished, it still needs plenty of polish. What has been shown so far looks promising, taking Mario on a journey across some ofgaming’s most iconic franchisesin a journey on par with his adventure in the originalSuper Mario 64, a classic platformer that continues to inspire gamers nearly 30 years after its release.
