Summary
Now thatThe Penguinhas officially wrapped up its season, it’s time for fans of the series to wonder if they’re going to get any more. It’s well known that the story of Oz Cobb will continue inThe Batman Part 2, though just how bigThe Penguin’s role in that film will be isn’t yet known. Nor is it known if he’ll be the main antagonist or a supplementary character like he was inThe Batman.
What is clear is James Gunn and Matt Reeves do like the way their plan is unfolding. Especially when considering that the HBO Max streaming series is one of themost watched shows of the fall. So far, everyone is keeping quiet on the exact plans. However, showrunner Lauren LeFranc did shed at least some light on the people behind the series' plans and what to look for as a sign that a Season 2 ofThe Penguinmight be coming.
Season 2 Of The Penguin Could Happen Under The Right Conditions
During the New York Comic Con, LeFranc talked toThe Directabout what would need to happen for asecond season of the critically acclaimed seriesto go into production. While the showrunner didn’t lay out specific factors to look for, she did seem to indicate that such a thing wasn’t completely off the table. “We need to feel like we can top ourselves,” she admitted.
She went on to say that she felt likeeveryone who worked onThe Penguingave it everything they had. She also said there had to be more they wanted to dig into and really focus on. She also made it clear that doing a Season 2 just because it would make a lot of money or get more accolades from critics was not the right motivation. LeFranc cares about the show’s characters and even cares about them despite pretty much everyone in the show being some degree of “terrible.”
One roadblock to a second season might have been removed just after the season finale aired. Colin Farrell, who is completely unrecognizable under the makeup and body suit that transforms him into Oz Cobb toldThe Hollywood Reporterthat he is indeed ready to give it another go. That’s a bit of aturn of events from earlierin the season when he talked about what a pain it was to go through everything that was needed in order tobecome his character.
For now, Season 1 ofThe Penguinis over and in the books and it may have served its purpose ofsetting upThe Batman Part 2well enough that it doesn’t need another season. There is also a question as to whether the DCU would feel there needs to be a second entry. The point of the just completed run was to flesh out the character more ahead of his second movie appearance. In that regard, it’s mission accomplished and James Gunn, Matt Reeves and Lauren LeFranc might be ready to set their sights on another character to give the same treatment.
