He’s the best there is at what he does, and what he does isn’t very nice. One of the most infamous of Marvel characters and the most famous of the X-Men,Wolverineis the edgy anti-hero whose destructive abilities are the dream of every young Marvel fan at one point or another.
He’s the man who had an entireX-Men cinematic universebased around him, from his introduction to the X-Men, to his origins, to his swan song, to further adventures with Deadpool. The clawed menace has had various versions of himself, especially in the comics. Here are five ofthe strongest Wolverines there are.
5Old Man Logan
An Aged Wolverine
An aged and weathered Wolverine who has seen it all. Wolverine is a character who, even from his first inception, has seen too much in this life. Many iterations of the X-Men and Wolverine show him having been born in the 1800s and fighting through many wars before he even becomes a part of the X-Men. From the jump, James Howlett is an old soul who has been through a lot, so a physically aged Wolverine who has seen even more is only ever going to be capable of even more carnage.
Old Man Loganis over 190 years old with over a century of battle experience, whether it be with bone claws or adamantium blades. He is more mentally and physically hardened than many other Wolverines, having experienced more battles than almost any other character still alive at the time. The one downside to Old Man Logan is that, at his advanced age, his healing factor has slowed down, not allowing him to regenerate as fast as he would have in his prime. This does not stop him from being just as, or even more bloodthirsty than many other Wolverine versions.
The 2017 film adaptation ofOld Man Logan, simply calledLogan,acted as Hugh Jackman’sswan song for the characterat the time, and gave audiences a glimpse of just what Old Man Logan was capable of. And it wasn’t pretty.
4Weapon X
An Alternate, More Intense Wolverine
One of Wolverine’s aliases is‘Weapon X’, a name that refers to the procedure which enhanced his already deadly bone claws to give him his signature adamantium blades. The government-backed facility conducted shady experiments that mainly looked into the field of human enhancement, and messed around with the bodies and abilities of mutants to do so. Other than Wolverine, quite a few famous mutants and mutates have had run-ins with this facility, includingDeadpool as the most infamous example, as well as Leech and Sabertooth.
There was a version of Wolverine who preferred to be referred to as Weapon X exclusively. An alternate version of the violent Canadian who had lived during an event known as the Age of Apocalypse. This awful age came to pass when Legion would go on to killProfessor X insteadof killing Magneto, kicking off a dark age within the timeline.
Weapon X, or Earth-295 Wolverine, is one of the most brutal Wolverines there is. This Logan lived in a world where the continent was taken over by Apocalypse. He weathered greater tragedy than most, and lost a hand in a grueling battle against Cyclops. He doesn’t let this wear him down, however. If anything, it makes him more bloodthirsty.
3Vampire Wolverine
The Dracula Usurper
Vampires in ancient myths are some of the most powerful creatures ever conceived. The Wolverine is one of the most powerful mutants ever conceived.To no surprise, their synergy inevitably created one of the most powerful Wolverines ever. Through draining Dracula’s blood, Wolverine makes himself into one of the strongest vampires andversions of Wolverineto ever exist.
Vampire Wolverineof Earth-9140, or Wolverine: Lord of the Vampires as he is commonly known, challenged and bested Dracula. The king of all vampires was no match for Logan, who would go on to create a vampire empire even better than the Count’s. He would work to turn mutants into vampires, rain terror on humans, capture major cities for himself, destroy heroes and villains alike, and reign as the vampire supreme. He would have done more too, had it not been for the intervention of The Punisher and ancient magical books.
Unfortunately, he still has the same weaknesses as normal vampires. He is vulnerable to sunlight, and a stake to his heart could potentially take him out, healing factor or not. Regardless, a Wolverine with vampire-like abilities is still a most frightening thought.
2Weapon H
Wolverine And The Hulk In One Man
Wolverine is a person fueled mostly by revenge and sorrow, an awful concoction that allows him to be the best there is at what he does, which is killing carnally. He was also involved in experiments that made him even better at being a killing machine of vengeance and rage. What would happen if you tried to replicate similar experiments and make someone fueled by resentment and anger, but with similarities to The Incredible Hulk of all creatures?Weapon His what would happen.
Clayton Cortez was a traumatized individual who had formerly served in the military. He was taken by force by Dr. Aliana Alba of Weapon X’s Batch-H division, where they attempted to turn him into a monster machine of a man who they could control. He was subjected to what could only be called a ‘Wolverine and Hulk hybridization experiment.’
Naturally, an uncontrollable monster was created, one that horrifically attacked its creators. Weapon H combines the insane power of Wolverine andHulk, two of the most violently capable Marvel characters. He is both a mutant and a gamma mutate. He has Hulk-like strength, Wolverine-like claws, and both of their rage shoved into one entity and multiplied to devastating effect.
1Phoenix Force Wolverine
Old Man Phoenix
The Phoenix Forceis undoubtedly one of the most powerful entities in all the Marvel Universes and, often through the possession of its favorite host, the telepathic Jean Grey, creates untold destruction throughout Earth and the galaxy at large. Sometimes though, the Phoenix Force does not have Jean Grey to possess. Sometimes the only choice is to possess another powerful mutant who it can wreak havoc through. That was what happened withPhoenix Wolverine.
Phoenix Wolverine was a combination that occurred on Earth-14412 in a vast, distant future. A much older Wolverine is the Phoenix Force’s choice as a host, seeing as he is one of the last living powerhouses in the universe at the time. This newly enhanced Logan would traverse the cosmos fighting against celestial bodies and clearing them out of existence, the first sign of his awesome power. Later, he would team up with goddesses and the darkest of all Dark Phoenixes, in collaborations and battles that other versions of Logan could never dream of.
Old Man Phoenix has the powers of cosmic awareness, psionic abilities, and energy manifestation, just like the Phoenix Force, with the added bonus of keeping his signature claws and healing factor, making him naturally one of the strongest Wolverines of all time.
