Street Fighter 6producer Shuhei Matsumoto has stated that he wants to bring back all ofCapcom’s classic fighting games onto modern consoles.Capcomis currently in an excellent spot in regard to the fighting game market.Street Fighter 6, the latest entry in the long-running franchise, has been a solid success for the company, having two seasons of DLC that add additional characters to its roster. Capcom has also been on the ball with re-releasing some of its most important fighting games, bringing many classic titles to new platforms.

The latest collection was announced earlier this past June,bringing back several classicMarvel vs. Capcomtitleson modern systems, while adding several modern conveniences like online rollback netcode. Other collections that Capcom has previously released includeStreet Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, a compilation package by Digital Eclipse that bundles variousStreet Fighterfighting games into one convenient title, andCapcom Fighting Collection, which includes various underrated Capcom fighting games likeDarkstalkersandRed Earth.

In an interview with IGN (first reported byEventHubs) Matsumoto was asked if there was interest in bringing back some moreclassic Capcom fighting games, sinceStreet Fighter 3: Third Strikehad a strong presence at the EVO 2024 fighting game tournament. Matsumoto responded excitedly, stating that Capcom wants all of its fighting games to be available on as many systems as possible. “We want all our classic [fighting] games to be available for modern consoles because we just want to be able to reach as many people who may have never had the opportunity to play these games back in the day,” said Matsumoto. “So, we constantly think forward, and we want to ensure that it’s as accessible as possible for all audiences.”

Looking to the Future of Capcom’s Classic Fighting Games

The reaction toMarvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics' announcement has been incredibly positive. Capcom has also kept fans interested in re-releases like the aforementionedFighting Collectionand bringing them to current hardware. Even more recently,SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaoswas also re-released on modern platforms, which drew interest from a lot of fans who hadn’t played the crossover before. Based on Matsumoto’s comments, this potentially opens the window for the re-release of anotherCapcom Vs.title,Capcom vs. SNK 2, which hasn’t been released since its PlayStation 3 PS2 Classics version in 2013.

There are a number ofclassic Capcom fighting games that are also in limbo, either from no new installments in several years or even re-releases on current generation systems, with the fans mostly keeping these games alive. Matsumoto also commented on the potential of future Capcom crossover titles, stating that they are a “big dream,” though the potential for new installments is greater than before. While it’s too early to tell, it’s evident that Matsumoto is passionate about bringing all of Capcom’s classic fighting games to modern platforms for everyone to play.
