Summary
Today is the end of an era forPlayStation, as today is whenLittleBigPlanet 3and all of its DLC are delisted from the PlayStation Store.LittleBigPlanetwas once one ofPlayStation’s major franchises, with the platforming series finding a great deal of success on the PlayStation 3 back in the day.
TheLittleBigPlanetfranchise flourished on the PS3, with the original game and its sequel both earning rave reviews from critics and significant commercial success. Sony expanded on theLittleBigPlanetIP through spin-offs, including a PSP release, a PlayStation Move-oriented game, a PS Vita version, a kart racing game, and an endless runner. Something new related to theLittleBigPlanetseries was released every single year from 2008 to 2012, with the franchise skipping 2013 only to come back in 2014 withRun Sackboy! Run!andLittleBigPlanet 3.
Unfortunately, theLittleBigPlanetservers were targeted in DDoS attacks in 2021 that saw their online services shut down. Sony tragically left the PS3LittleBigPlanetservers dead, but it eventually broughtLittleBigPlanet 3back online. In 2024, a separate technical issue prompted Sony to permanently shut downLittleBigPlanet 3’s online multiplayer functionality, leaving the millions of levels created by fans over the course of the three main series games to be lost to the void. Understandably, manyLittleBigPlanetfans were upset when theLBP3servers were shut down, and now things are even worse for the franchise. While it’s still available to purchase from the PlayStation Store at the time of this writing,LittleBigPlanet 3is being delisted today, marking the end of an era for the PlayStation brand.
LittleBigPlanet 3 is Being Delisted
LittleBigPlanet 3’s departure from the PlayStation Store means that, unless one tracks down a physical copy, it will be impossible for newcomers to play the game on their PS4 and PS5 systems. All ofLittleBigPlanet 3’s DLC is being delisted as well, meaning that platforming fans on PlayStation are losing out on a lot of content today. Theheart and soul ofLittleBigPlanetwas always its user-generated content, and so many may have already dismissed the games after their servers were shut down, but this delisting is certainly the final nail in the coffin.
WithLittleBigPlanet 3no longer easily obtainable through the PlayStation Store on PS4 and PS5, it seems Sony has completely moved on from traditionalLBPgames. Fans will no doubt have their fingers crossed that Sony will reviveLittleBigPlanetdown the line, but that remains to be seen. The latest console release was2020’sSackboy: A Big Adventure, which is a co-op platformer that ditched the user-generated content angle.Ultimate Sackboy, meanwhile, is a mobile endless runner that came out in 2023 to middling reception.
OriginalLittleBigPlanetdeveloperMedia Molecule has yet to announce its next project, but fans shouldn’t hold their breath that it’s aLittleBigPlanetrevival. Media Molecule’s next game is believed to be a new IP, so it’s hard to say when exactlyLittleBigPlanetmay ever make its comeback.
