After weeks of rumors and leaks, Activision has confirmed that bothModern Warfare 3andModern Warfare 2will be removed from theCall of DutyHQ app today, July 29. With the launch ofBlack Ops 7on the horizon, publisher Activision appears to be making way for its release and will be removing the 2022 and 2023Call of Dutytitles from the HQ app, but many fans are urging the studio to simply scrap the feature altogether.
TheCall of DutyHQ appwas introduced in 2022 and offered fans a way to access many of the current entries in the series. At the time of its launch, it combinedCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2andWarzone, with older titles such asModern Warfare,Vanguard, andBlack Ops Cold Waralso available in the app, but not directly tied to the launcher itself. 2023’sModern Warfare 3and 2024’sBlack Ops 6were also added toCall of DutyHQ upon their release, allowing fans to directly access all four titles without having to leave the app. Unfortunately, it proved to be more controversial than successful, as many are still calling for Activision to revert back to traditional releases for the series.
Earlier this month, a reliable leaker and data miner revealed that Activision was gearing up to make amajor change toCall of DutyHQ. Now, less than one month later, the studio has taken to Twitter to announce that both 2022’sModern Warfare 2and 2023’sModern Warfare 3will be removed from the app on Tuesday, July 29, at 9 AM PT. After their removal, both titles will become standalone downloads, which means those still playing the shooters will need to redownload them on their platform of choice. Activision explained that any legacy content related toModern Warfare 2andModern Warfare 3modes within the mainCall of Dutyinstall will be automatically removed on August 7 to free up storage space.
Modern Warfare 2 and 3 Are Being Removed From Call of Duty HQ
In a follow-up tweet, Activision noted that the removal of the titles will not have an impact onCall of Duty: Warzone, which means anyModern Warfare2or3operators and weapons will still be available to use in the Battle Royale title.
Activision says the decision to remove both titles from thecontroversialCall of DutyHQ appis to “free up storage space,” but many are urging the studio to completely remove the feature. Twitter userInfoCoDES_said they “hope this is the beginning of the end ofCODHQ,” whileGNGWarzonesaid, “It’s time to putCall of DutyHQ to bed, to be honest.” They then go on to state that they “see no benefit” from the app’s functionality. This is a sentiment that is shared by many, but withBlack Ops 7right around the corner, it looks like Activision is once again intending to tie its release to theCall of DutyHQ app.
This isn’t the only major change to come to the series this month either, as Activision recently added anew requirement to playCall of Duty. As of July 16, the studio requires all players to add their birthday to theirCall of Dutyaccount. Anybody who is under the age requirement will need parental permission or will risk having their entire account deleted.
