Summary

The Umbrella Academy’samazing run on Netflix might have come to an end, but the show’s creative mastermind is already discussing ways to take their unique vision and version of events beyond the confines of the streaming show.

The Umbrella Academycame to Netflix as one of thebest comic-inspired series not to draw from Marvel or DC, adapting the Dark Horse graphic novel series of the same name to massive success. It would get off to a good start and then would really pick up a ton of critical and fan appreciation with the show’s second season. The show’s heavy focus on time travel plots and super-powered antics would find a great deal of support through its third season before it was announced that it would be wrapping up soon.

The Umbrella Academywould begin filming its fourth and final seasonin 2023 and released on Netflix on July 27, 2025, and would be met with mixed reviews due to its audacious plots. In the aftermath of the final season, series showrunner Steve Blackman spoke toThe Hollywood Reporterabout the final season in-depth but also talked about the potential the Netflix franchise has for more iterations in the future. In addition to highlighting some of the more obvious potential stories that could be told in a spinoff or continuation, Blackman also mentioned his personal hopes for the series to stay alive in some way through a future iteration if Netflix was willing to take up the charge.

It is really up to Netflix at the end of the day — and we’ve talked about it and it’s a lot of variables in play — but I think there’s a great story in young Hazel [Cameron Britton] and Cha-Cha [Blige] down the road. There’s obviously the Commission. I think there’s wonderful stories also with some other secondary characters. Then what’s wonderful about our world is we could crossover with our main characters anytime we want to because in a wonderful time-traveling world, you can end up with anyone anytime you want. There are ideas, there’s things I’ve talked about, and if Netflix decides down the road, I’d love to do it. But ultimately Netflix will make that decision. I hope this isn’t the end of Umbrella Academy. I hope there’s another iteration somewhere down the road.

There was always going to be a lot of difficulty in ending a beloved series, and this pressure mounted even further when it was revealed thatThe Umbrella Academy’sfinal season would be shorter than the previous ones. This left the cast and crew with the Herculean task of wrapping up three seasons of fan-favorite moments, characters and concepts in just six episodes, while also working with threads given by franchise creator Gerard Way concerning the upcoming volume 4 ofThe Umbrella Academygraphic novel series, titledSparrow Academy. The result was a mixed bag for many, and there’s no doubt that another chance to tell stories from this franchise would be creatively fulfilling, and could also strengthen fan love for the franchise, a laHouse of the Dragonbolstering its franchise after the final season ofGame of Thrones.

If Netflix is willing to go ahead, then there are indeed tons of ways the series could tell fans new stories and stay relevant, andThe Umbrella Academycould even potentially see future crossoverswith other IPs in a similar vein to its Call of Duty appearance. While the original graphic novel franchise is still ongoing, there’s a lot that could be done with the audience that Netflix’s hit garnered.
