Marvel’s Spider-Manleft its door fairly wide open to what could occur in a sequel besides Harry Osborn obviously emerging from his stasis chamber and becoming Venom one way or another due to the bond he had with the symbiote. However,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2has put every requisite piece in place for what would appear to be a calculated and unsurprising third installment. If so, it’s already been made plain which villains will appear and whoMarvel’s Spider-Man 3’s transparent final boss fightwill be.
For instance, it’d be a huge letdown if nothing ever comes of The Flame’s reveal as Cletus Kasady inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, who was inexplicably able to retrieve a portion of the alien symbiote from Oscorp despite no mention of hewed samples prior. Likewise, as it’s revealed in the final cutscene before credits roll, it can be presumed that Mary Jane Watson’s podcast, “The New Normal,” is joining Danika Hart’s and J. Jonah Jameson’s, and therefore it is expected that players will also be able to listen to hers while traversing the open world. If that becomes the case, Insomniac mustn’t confine her to this role.
Mary Jane Watson Has Fought Tirelessly for Her Voice to Be Heard in Marvel’s Spider-Man
Mary Jane has wanted to have an impactful, appreciated, and equal voice sinceMarvel’s Spider-Man, where she felt like she wasn’t perceived as a meaningful partner to Peter Parker or, more particularly, Spider-Man. But while she and Peter kissed and made up right as credits began to roll inMarvel’s Spider-Man, that rekindled relationship didn’t seem any more strengthened or dependable inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Instead, the two hardly work together and are simply in the middle ofmoving in together in May’s Queens house, which MJ seems to harbor some disdain for since Peter isn’t capable of sustaining a job or paying the mortgage. In order to keep them both afloat, MJ feels the need to write fluff pieces for Jameson at The Daily Bugle since that’s the only way he’ll accept or publish anything she’s working on, though it wears on her ethics.
After Peter helps her free herself from the Scream symbiote, MJ spontaneously calls Jameson and quits the Bugle. Now, seemingly doing something she’s happy with, MJ runs a podcast from home whilePeter is apparently rebuilding a bite-sized Emily-May Foundation from their garageand it would be disastrous if Insomniac doesn’t give her anything to contribute to the threequel otherwise since it would contradict her hard-earned development thus far on a narrative level.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 Shouldn’t Reduce MJ’s Role to That of Danika or Jameson
“The New Normal” could be a podcast players listen to while swinging around, not unlikepodcasts players voluntarily or involuntarily listen to from Danika or Jameson, and as a result she’d add a bit of competition to the mixture. It’s unknown what exactly her podcast would be about; perhaps she shares news about ongoing events in the community like Danika, or perhaps she shares a more neutral, unbiased reporting stance on larger events in New York City than Jameson.
MJ and Jameson could certainly have a rivalry brewing between ex-editor and current editor-in-chief after she told him to “kiss her ass,” too, and heated exchanges between them via podcast rants could be fun to overhear.
That said,having a podcast hopefully won’t mean MJ takes a backseat inMarvel’s Spider-Man 3. The irony would be palpable if she’s fought to have her own voice for two games and is leashed to her voice alone in the third installment, especially because players would be able to shut it off if they wanted to. But, if she and Peter are both working from home and Peter isn’t active as Spider-Man for a while, it’ll still be nice to tune into MJ’s content when out and about as Miles Morales, whose plate will inevitably be full with Cindy Moon’s Silk and his new girlfriend, Hailey Cooper.
