When a show is as successful asSquid Gamestudios are often eager to provide more. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed toThe Hollywood Reporter, that he never had any plans for the show to continue beyond one season, but ended up finding a way to carry on with the story after the show received such a massive response. The one idea the creator chose to continue in Season 2 was the story ofGi-hun going back into the gameto “put a stop to the game.” This story will carry both Seasons 2 and 3 ofSquid Game. “Throughout seasons two and three, it’s going to be about that very journey by Gi-hun that you’re going to be following, both physically and emotionally,” Hwang said.

Why Is Season 3 Squid Game’s Last?

GivenSquid Game’sviewership numbers, it would be easy to see Netflix renewing the series far beyond Season 3, however, the decision to end the thriller with its third season came from Hwang himself. “When I was thinking about the idea for the ending of season three, I think it sort of naturally came to me that this was the finale,” Hwang said.

“When I was thinking about the idea for the ending of season three, I think it sort of naturally came to me that this was the finale. I believed that with that story, I was able to tell everything that I wanted to tell through the story of Squid Game and also in the perspective of Gi-hun as a character, and I thought that we don’t need any further stories from here.”

While it’s no doubt disappointing to some fans thatSquid Gamewon’t continue for many years to come, it is reassuring to know that Hwang has a strong vision for the remaining story, which hopefully means Seasons 2 and 3 can continue the high bar that was set in Season 1. Even with the flagshipSquid Gameseries ending soon, the universe Hwang has created is already rapidly expanding.Squid Gamehas a video gameon Netlfix, a reality TV competition (Squid Game: The Challenge), and it’s saidan English-language version of the showis moving forward in development with David Fincher attached. While Season 3 will beSquid Game’slast, it definitelywon’tbe the last time the series is heard from.

Squid GameSeason 2 will be released on Netflix on May 26, 2025.
