Summary
The state of Monolith’sWonder Womanis questionable at the moment, but it’s still just as intriguing. As the studio that broughtMiddle-Earth: Shadow of Mordorto life, Monolith has what it takes to craft a compelling story based on DC Comics' famous Amazonian. There isn’t much known aboutWonder Womanat the moment, but recent leaks have revealed a possible glimpse at what players can expect from the game’s enemies.
These leaks have suggested thatWonder Womanwill feature Greek mythologyas its main source of antagonism. At first, having creatures from Greek mythology as the game’s enemies seems like a perfect match. It addresses the problem that many superhero games run into when it comes to featuring believable enemies that can withstand otherworldly strength. However, this also presents an issue with Monolith’s bread and butter: the Nemesis System.
Monolith’s Rumored Wonder Woman Enemies Could Be at Odds With the Nemesis System
The Nemesis System May Not Translate Well With Ancient Greek Monsters
Monolith’s Nemesis System is one of the biggest innovations in modern gaming. How the Nemesis System worksis simple enough, but it’s a massive game-changer that didn’t seem possible until Monolith pulled it off. Essentially, when players get killed by a random enemy NPC or an enemy survives an encounter with the player, the game will promote and empower that NPC, making them more dangerous and encouraging the player to go on a pursuit for revenge. This creates a unique recurring enemy unlike any other playthrough, making each experience unique to the player.
The implementation of the Nemesis System is one of the defining innovations in 21st-century gaming, butWonder Woman’s rumored mythical focus could be a poor fit for the Nemesis System. There are hopes thatWonder Womanwill blend the Nemesis System withArkham-style combat, but the possible mythological enemies are not a promising sign. Going up against a Hydra or Cerberus could be incredible, but these creatures presumably don’t have the same emotional depth that the Orcs ofShadow of Mordordo.Shadow of Mordor’s Orcs still think like humans, so they can have the emotional capacity to lead them to revenge. As far as it’s known, the creatures of Greek myth don’t have these same thoughts and feelings.
Monolith’sWonder Womangame was announced in 2021.
This isthe biggest hurdle forWonder Womanto clear. The game really needs its Nemesis System to shine, since that is what makes Monolith such a special developer, but how that can be translated into a story with mythological creatures is completely unclear.
Wonder Woman Can Flip Greek Mythology On Its Head
There is, however, one route forWonder Womanto go that could make the developer’s Nemesis System shine once again. Despite reports thatWonder Woman’s development is not going well, the game has yet to be canceled. As long as the game seems to be continuing its production,Wonder Womanis still a real possibility. AnArkham-inspired take on the DC heroine is something that many fans have been dreaming of, but the Nemesis System has to shine as well. Monolith could take some extensive liberties with Greek mythology and give mythological creatures, like the aforementioned Hydra and Cerberus, human-like personalities that could essentially set the stage for other characters of the same species seeking revenge.
Unfortunately, recent DC games have had a bad run as of late, so there is a lot of hope riding onWonder Womanto be a success.Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice LeagueandGotham Knightswere less than stellar additions to the DC video games roster, but the promise ofWonder Womanbrings a little bit of hope. As time passes, Monolith will potentially reveal more about its silent production ofWonder Woman, and an in-depth look at its Nemesis System will hopefully be included.
