Summary

Blizzard has revealed that the popularWorld of Warcraftgame mode Plunderstorm will return in early 2025, nearly a year after its initial run. The return of Plunderstorm toWorld of Warcraftwill see a mix of old and new rewards for players to obtain from participating in and winning matches, including mounts and cosmetics.

Introduced inDragonflightPatch 10.2.6,Plunderstorm is a pirate-themed battle royalegame mode inspired by titles likeFortnite. Plunderstorm allows players to create avatars separate from their regularWorld of Warcraftcharacters, each clad in a pirate’s outfit. These swashbucklers are then dropped into a 60-player version of the Arathi Highlands zone map, where they must collect coins, items, and class-themed abilities to level up and take out other players. A storm wall gradually encircles the Arathi Highlands to deter players from staking out a location for too long. Plunderstorm players can fight Solo, or join a Duos or Trios squad to dominate the battlefield.

Althoughmore news about theWarcraftfranchise will arriveon November 13, that has not stopped Blizzard from suddenly fulfilling a popular request. In a newblog post, Blizzard confirmed that Plunderstorm would return in early 2025, but did not give a precise date. The first run of Plunderstorm ran for nearly two months before concluding in late April 2024, meaning its return will arrive nearly a year after the initial run. The next round of Plunderstorm will also introduce new cosmetic rewards for players to earn, along with older rewards such as mounts and appearances that can be obtained from the new Plunderstore. Whether this storefront will utilize in-game currency or real money was not made clear at the time of writing.

Plunderstorm Is Coming Back to World of Warcraft

As before, Plunderstorm will only be available in the retail version ofWorld of Warcraftfor a limited time, and all add-ons will likely be disabled to ensure fair play. In the 2024 iteration of Plunderstorm,Blizzard utilized a Renown systemthat granted cosmetic rewards each time players ranked up, with a cap of 40. Renown points were granted based on how well a player performed in a Plunderstorm match, with more points granted for taking out multiple players and finishing a match in a high spot. It remains to be seen if a Renown system will be used again in the 2025 version of Plunderstorm.

WhilePlunderstorm will remain a limited-time event, its return is a good sign forWorld of Warcraftplayers who enjoy content different from the norm. Only time will tell what else Blizzard has planned for 2025.
