SinceLegion,World of Warcrafthas been using the World Quest system in all of its expansions. With each expansion, the system has grown and changed as Blizzard attempts to find the right balance while also keeping things fresh. But, with the release ofThe War Within,World of Warcraftseems to be changing its World Quest approach a bit. While there’s arguably some upside to this iteration, the game’s next expansion,Midnight, really needs to revamp it again.

Instead of changing the World Quest system drastically,The War Withinlargely kept things how they were duringDragonflight. Although the quests may be in different zones, the actual quest content feelsripped straight from the Dragon Isles. Players are still doing many of the same things and earning many of the same rewards. It may be working well now, but if Blizzard does not change things in the next expansion, then players may quickly get burnt out by this repetitive content.

It’s Time for World of Warcraft to Shake Up Its World Quests Again

The War Within’s World Quests Feel Like Dragonflights

With eachWorld of WarcraftexpansionsinceLegion, Blizzard has introduced a plethora of new World Quests. Each new zone had quests that tied into that zone’s aesthetic and story, all of which aimed to make players feel like they were helping against whatever threat the world was dealing with at the time. This was the trend for years, but for some reason,The War Withinhas not really followed in those footsteps.

While there are some brand-new World Quests, and Blizzard has changed the way players interact with them a bit, many of the quests feel like they were ripped directly from past expansions. Specifically, much ofThe War Within’s World Questshave seemingly been copied-and-pasted fromDragonflight. Players will still spend much of their time in flying races, cataloging the regions, and scaling mountainsides. Additionally, the Arcane Riddles questline shares many similarities with the Kirin Tor World Quests of the past.

Midnight Needs to Revamp these Quests Once More

TheseWorld Quests were popular inDragonflight, so it makes sense to carry them over toThe War Within. However, they also feel a bit out of place this time around, since the main plot feels a bit more urgent thanDragonflight’s did. Because of this, the Bronze Timekeepers really have no place within this story, the catalogers are nowhere to be found, and climbing mountainsides does not seem that important right now. Nevertheless, they all play a part within the World Quest system.

Whilenot much is known aboutWorld of Warcraft:Midnight, it really needs to shake things up. These quests were fun when they were first introduced, but players have already spent two years doing them. DuringThe War Within, they will likely be spending another two years doing these exact same quests again. After four years of the same thing, players deserve something different.

There have been some similar World Quests shared between expansions, but these two expansions feel the most similar. Even if they come back inMidnight, Blizzard should really make sure that they actually fit within the aesthetic of the expansion. Maybe someone else wants players to race through the skies, maybe a faction needs players to take pictures of some type of anomaly or enemy, and maybe players need to climb some tall structure to get a collectible at the top. Whatever the story idea may be, these quests desperately need that shake up.
