Identified by version number 1.3, this release rebalances one part of the game that frustrated some players and addresses a number of early fan complaints aboutWuchang: Fallen Feathersperformance issues, among other novelties.

A soulslike RPG from Chinese developer Leenzee,Wuchang: Fallen Featherswas releasedfor PC and consoles this Thursday, July 24. While the game was met with mostly favorable reviews, as underlined by its 75 average score on OpenCritic, it has also received substantial criticism for performance issues, particularly on PC.

Some of those complaints are seemingly addressed by the 1.3 update, which rolled out on July 24, mere hours following the game’s debut. Among its changes is a readjustment of the resolution limits imposed on supersampling, an anti-aliasing technique for smoothening jagged edges that first renders an image at a higher internal resolution, then downsamples the result before outputting it to a display. This, in general, improves visual clarity, but is taxing on hardware. Leenzee opted to lower the limits “on select GPUs” in an attempt to avoidWuchang: Fallen Feathersperformance dropsstemming from supersampling.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Nerfs Frustrating Encounter

The 1.3 update also rebalances a Chapter 2 encounter in which players navigate a deadly field. Without venturing into spoilers, a vocal segment of early adopterscriticizedWuchang: Fallen Feathersfor this set piece, calling it frustrating and unenjoyable. Detailed information about the encounter and its nerf (which spoils its premise for those who haven’t yet reached Chapter 2) is available in the official changelog attached to the patch.

New Wuchang Update Includes PC Performance Improvements

The update introduces some PC-specific tweaks, like disabling the Low Latency Mode by default and adding optimizations for lower-end GPUs. Specifically, cards with under 8GB VRAM will now leverage additional memory-saving techniques that will reduce texture quality but should help with performance. Players who are experiencing issues with more powerful hardware can still enable these new optimizations by setting the texture quality to Low. With Leenzee linking crashes and stuttering to insufficient video RAM, the studio expects that these changes will reduce both.

Wuchang Is Giving Free DLC as Compensation for Launch Issues

As an apology for the game’s launch issues, Leenzee will be giving away theWuchang: Fallen FeathersOriginal Soundtrack DLC to early adopters across all platforms, with the developer saying as much in its July 24 patch notes. Those playing the ARPG via Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass presumably won’t qualify for the complimentary pack.Wuchang: Fallen Feathers' Steam user reviews are still “Overwhelmingly Negative” on account of its performanceissues, as well as some minor complaints about the soulslike RPG’s difficulty.
