Chain Attacks have always been a core part of the combat experience inZenless Zone Zero. It’s a unique take on the tag mechanic commonly seen in fighting games, except it’s been adapted for a PvE action-RPG environment.
Among the new additions inZenless Zone Zero’s 1.1patchis the ability to enable or disable Chain Attacks. Switching it to manual lets players exploit their DPS windows to the fullest. Using manual mode takes a bit of getting used to, and if you’ve accidentally turned this feature on, you may always turn it back off. Here’s how.
How To Enable (& Use) Manual Chain Attacks In Zenless Zone Zero
The game will let you choose between the Auto and Manual Chain Attack modes when you first start playing. However, if you prefer one over the other, you’ll need to go to theOthertab in the Options menu. You’ll see a Chain Attack Mode option at the top of the list. From here, just pick whichever option you’d like, then return to the game as per usual. You can do this at any time, even if you’re mid-combat.
In Auto mode, Chain Attacks are automatically triggered once you hit an enemy with a heavy attackafter filling up their Daze meter. If you’re not sure what counts as a heavy attack, here they are:
To prevent Chain Attacks from triggering in Manual mode, you need tohold down your Attack or Special Attack buttondepending on what you’re hitting the enemy hit. This will let you continue your combo while keeping the enemy Dazed for longer. This can be a little tricky to do with characters like Lycaon or Qingyi, who both have inputs tied to holding down the attack button. you may circumvent this by pressing and holding the Attack button again while they’re mid-animation.
Why Should You Use Manual Mode?
Choosing between Auto and Manual Chain Attack modes is mostly decided by player preference. Some players may like constantly triggering Chain Attacks on stunned enemies, while others may prefer experimenting with combos that would otherwise get interrupted by Chain Attacks.
Also, there are some cases where using a Chain Attack could lead to a DPS loss. For example, there areZenless Zone Zerocharacters like Ellenwith EX Special Attacks that have multiple moves in one combo. Chain Attacks can prevent her from using the Sharknami part of her EX Special combo, potentially costing players a few precious seconds' worth of DPS.
Other characters like Anby can launch enemies into the air, opening them up to juggle combos that can help build Decibels and Energy for the entire team while keeping the affected enemy suspended. Without automatic Chain Attacks getting in your way, you can make some stylish combos that, while not completely practical, do make the game more fun to play.
